Precision Reverse Engineering for Obsolete and Legacy Components

Precision Reverse Engineering for Obsolete and Legacy Components

When critical components become obsolete, original drawings are unavailable, or suppliers are no longer able to support your equipment, Turnell & Odell Engineering provides a complete reverse engineering service to accurately recreate parts and assemblies.

With decades of experience manufacturing precision machined components for industries including defence, nuclear, food processing, medical, oil & gas and specialist machinery, we help customers extend the life of valuable equipment while maintaining the highest standards of quality and traceability.

Whether you require a single replacement component or an ongoing production run, we can transform an existing part into a fully documented engineering solution.

From Sample Component to Production Drawing

Our reverse engineering process combines advanced inspection technology with practical manufacturing expertise to produce accurate engineering data and repeatable components.

Material Identification

Knowing exactly what material a component has been manufactured from is essential to ensuring the replacement performs as intended.

Where material certification is unavailable, we can use Positive Material Identification (PMI) testing to determine the alloy composition of metallic components. This enables us to identify the correct material specification before manufacture begins, helping to ensure the replacement offers the same performance, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties as the original.

High Accuracy Measurement

Accurate dimensional data is fundamental to successful reverse engineering.

Using advanced inspection equipment including Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) technology and 3D scanning, we capture the geometry of complex components with exceptional accuracy.

These measurement techniques allow us to:

  • Capture intricate profiles and free-form surfaces
  • Measure complex machined features
  • Verify critical tolerances
  • Create highly accurate digital models
  • Compare manufactured components against original geometry

Whether the component is a simple machined part or a complex assembly, we can build a complete dimensional dataset ready for manufacture.

Reverse-Engineering

CAD Modelling and Engineering Drawings

Once measurement data has been captured, our engineering team produces detailed 3D CAD models and fully dimensioned manufacturing drawings.

These drawings become a permanent engineering record that can be used for:

  • Future replacement components
  • Production manufacturing
  • Inspection documentation
  • Design improvements
  • Assembly documentation

Having accurate CAD data also allows modifications or design improvements to be incorporated where appropriate, helping improve reliability, manufacturability or service life.

Manufacturing the Finished Component

Unlike many companies offering reverse engineering alone, Turnell & Odell can take the project through to completion by manufacturing the finished component in-house.

Our CNC milling and turning capabilities enable us to produce precision components from a wide range of engineering materials including stainless steels, alloy steels, aluminium, titanium, plastics and specialist alloys.

Every component is inspected before delivery to ensure it meets the required specification.

Supporting Critical Industries

Reverse engineering is particularly valuable where equipment downtime is costly or where original manufacturers no longer support legacy machinery.

We regularly support customers operating in sectors including:

  • Defence
  • Nuclear
  • Food & Beverage
  • Medical
  • Oil & Gas
  • Motorsport
  • Industrial Machinery
  • Automation
  • Special Purpose Machines

Our experience working to demanding quality standards means customers can have confidence that replacement components are manufactured to the highest level of precision.
